Intestinal bipartition
Procedure Information
Intestinal bipartition is a bariatric surgery in which the stomach is reduced (like in a sleeve) and a portion of the small intestine is connected directly to the new stomach. This creates two pathways for food, reducing calorie absorption. The surgery is performed laparoscopically under general anesthesia, typically taking 1–2 hours. Hospitalization is usually 24–48 hours, after which patients can travel home. Rest for one week is recommended before gradually returning to normal activities.
Post-surgery diet: Start with sugar-free, non-carbonated liquids for the first week, move to pureed foods for 2–3 weeks, and gradually transition to soft and then regular foods by the fourth week. Regular medical follow-ups are recommended.
Patients can expect to lose 70–80% of excess weight (approximately 30–50 kg / 66–110 lbs) during the first year. This procedure is highly effective for controlling type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol, and can improve overall quality of life. Recommended for patients with a BMI over 40, or over 35 with associated health conditions.
