Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass
Procedure Information
The Roux-en-Y gastric bypass creates a small stomach pouch connected to the intestine in a “Y” shape, helping patients eat less and reducing calorie absorption. It is the ideal procedure to treat conditions such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol. The procedure is performed laparoscopically under general anesthesia, typically taking 1–2 hours. Hospitalization is usually 24–48 hours, after which patients can travel home. Rest for one week is recommended before gradually returning to normal activities.
Post-surgery diet: Begin with sugar-free, non-carbonated liquids for about a week, move to pureed foods for 2–3 weeks, and gradually transition to soft and then regular foods around four weeks after surgery. Frequent medical follow-ups are important.
Patients can expect to lose 65–80% of excess weight (approximately 25–45 kg / 55–99 lbs) during the first year. This surgery may also improve or resolve obesity-related conditions and enhance overall quality of life.
Recommended for patients with a BMI over 40, or over 35 with associated health conditions.
