What is gastric bypass?
Mini Gastric Bypass is the ideal procedure for people with morbid obesity (BMI 40+) and/or patients suffering from conditions such as prediabetes, diabetes, insulin resistance, hypothyroidism, and/or any other metabolic disease. This surgery, in addition to helping you lose weight safely, will help you improve control of elevated blood sugar, thereby also increasing the chance of remission in diseases such as diabetes.
Procedure
The procedure has two main effects: Restriction: The small gastric pouch limits the amount of food that can be eaten at one time, which helps reduce caloric intake. 2. Malabsorption: By bypassing a portion of the small intestine, the absorption of calories and nutrients is reduced, which also contributes to weight loss. Mini gastric bypass can help resolve or improve several obesity-related conditions, such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea, and heart disease.
Recovery
-48 hours of hospitalization. Patient may travel home upon discharge. -7 days of non-strenuous rest at home (patient may walk, bathe, and perform simple activities at home). -Exercise one month after surgery. -Resume normal life three months after surgery.

Differences between Bypass and Mini Bypass
Mini Gastric Bypass: This involves a single anastomosis (connection), where the stomach is divided to create a small gastric pouch and connected directly to the small intestine. This procedure is generally shorter and less complicated. Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass: This involves two anastomoses. Here, the stomach is also divided to form a small pouch, but the intestine is reconstructed in a "Y" shape, connecting the new gastric pouch to a lower section of the small intestine. It is more complex and takes longer.
Importance of Clinical Assessment
The choice between these two procedures depends on the patient's clinical condition, including their medical history, current weight, weight loss goals, and any existing comorbidities such as diabetes or heart disease. Evaluation by a specialized medical team is crucial. This team includes the prestigious Board Certified Bariatric Surgeon, Dr. Andrea de Anda, a nutritionist, a psychologist, and other healthcare professionals to ensure that the selected procedure is the safest and most effective for the patient.
