What is the gastric ballon?
The gastric balloon (also known as the intragastric balloon) is a weight-loss procedure that involves placing a silicone balloon filled with saline solution in your stomach. This helps you lose weight by limiting the amount you can eat and making you feel full faster. Gastric balloon placement is a temporary procedure that does not require surgery.
How does the gastric balloon work?
The balloon acts as a barrier in the stomach, promoting early satiety and reducing food intake. This procedure should be accompanied by a multidisciplinary team specializing in bariatric nutrition and psychology, as well as a commitment to adopting healthy habits such as exercise.

How is the gastric balloon placed?
The gastric balloon is placed (and removed) endoscopically under sedation. The patient is asleep, so there is no discomfort or pain during placement. It is a non-surgical procedure and requires no hospitalization.
IMPORTANT: You must not have had bariatric surgery, hiatal hernia surgery, gastritis, or severe ulcer surgery to be a candidate. Therefore, a comprehensive medical evaluation is essential.
Recommended for a BMI of 27 to 40 (grade II obesity). This procedure is ideal if you are looking for a weight loss of 33 to 44 lb in a temporary (up to 12 months) and without surgery.
Adverse effects
It's important to mention that, in most cases, undesirable effects are related to the body's initial adjustment to the balloon and the patient's preparation before the procedure.
Some of the most common effects may include:
✳️ Nausea and vomiting: These symptoms are common in the first few days after balloon placement, as the body is adjusting to its presence.
✳️ Cramps and stomach discomfort: It's normal to experience cramps or discomfort while your stomach adjusts to the balloon.

Risks
Pain and nausea affect one-third of patients shortly after intragastric balloon insertion. However, these symptoms usually only last a few days after the device is placed.
Although uncommon, serious side effects can occur after intragastric balloon placement. Call your doctor immediately if you experience nausea, vomiting, or abdominal pain at any time after surgery.
Potential risks include balloon deflation. If this happens, there is also a risk that the balloon could migrate through the digestive tract. This can cause an obstruction, and another procedure or surgery may be necessary to remove the device.
Other possible risks include excessive swelling, acute pancreatitis, ulcers, or a hole in the stomach wall, known as a perforation. Surgery will likely be required to repair a perforation.
